How to Resurface a Shower Pan

Shower floors take the most abuse. Learn how to resurface them properly — and why DIY on floors often fails faster than on walls.

Floor Warning
Shower floors get walked on daily. DIY coatings wear through much faster on floors than walls. Anti-slip texture is also critical for safety.

Types of Shower Pans That Can Be Resurfaced

GOOD

Fiberglass/Acrylic Pans

Most common type. Can be resurfaced with proper prep. Professional refinishing works well on these materials.

GOOD

Tile Shower Floors

Can be resurfaced if grout is in good condition. Coating fills grout lines. Professional anti-slip additive recommended.

CAUTION

Cracked Pans

Cracks must be repaired first. If pan is cracked through to subfloor, water damage may require replacement instead.

NO

Leaking Pans

If water is leaking to subfloor, resurfacing won't help. The pan and possibly subfloor need replacement.

DIY Shower Pan Resurfacing Steps

1

Deep Clean with Mold Killer

Shower floors often have mold in grout or textured areas. Use bleach solution first, then TSP. Scrub thoroughly and rinse well.

2

Repair Cracks

Fill cracks with appropriate filler (fiberglass repair for fiberglass, epoxy for tile). Let cure and sand smooth.

3

Sand Entire Surface

Use 320-400 grit. Sand the entire floor evenly. This is harder on textured surfaces — be thorough.

4

Mask Drain & Walls

Tape off drain, caulk lines, and walls. Protect any areas you don't want coated.

5

Apply Coating with Anti-Slip

Apply 2-3 coats. For safety, add anti-slip additive to final coat or use textured roller. Smooth floors are dangerous when wet.

6

Cure 72+ Hours

Floors need extra cure time due to foot traffic. Wait minimum 72 hours, ideally 5-7 days before regular use. Recaulk drain.

Shower Pan FAQs

Is resurfaced shower floor slippery?

It can be if anti-slip additive isn't used. Professional refinishing includes textured anti-slip coating. DIY must add anti-slip additive to the final coat or risk creating a dangerous slick surface.

Can you refinish just the shower floor?

Yes. We often refinish just the pan if walls are in good condition. We can also refinish pan + walls together for a complete refresh. Matching the existing wall color to a new floor is possible.

How long until I can use the shower?

Professional refinishing: 48-72 hours minimum, 5-7 days for full cure. DIY: same timeline but critical to follow — floors fail faster if used too soon. Foot traffic stresses uncured coating.
