How Long Until You Can Use Your Tub?
Your refinished bathtub needs time to cure properly. Learn the timeline for light use vs. full use, what affects curing, and how to ensure the best possible results.
The Quick Answer
After your bathtub is refinished, the epoxy coating needs time to fully harden. While it may feel dry to the touch within a few hours, the coating continues to cure and strengthen for 24-48 hours.
Cure Time Timeline
Wet — Do Not Touch
The coating is still wet and extremely vulnerable. Even a light touch will leave permanent marks. Keep the bathroom door closed and prevent anyone (including pets) from entering.
Tacky — Still Vulnerable
Surface feels dry but remains tacky underneath. Fingerprints and pressure marks can still occur. Keep ventilation running. The chemical smell will be strongest during this phase.
Hardening — Light Use Only
Surface is firm but not fully cured. At the 24-hour mark, you can carefully use the sink for hand washing. Avoid running water directly into the tub. No standing water yet.
Nearly Cured — Almost Ready
The coating is reaching full hardness. At 48 hours, you can take showers and baths normally. Use lukewarm water for the first few uses — avoid extremely hot water.
Fully Cured — Normal Use
The finish has reached full hardness. You can now place shampoo bottles, use bath caddies, and use the tub normally. The coating will continue to strengthen over the first week.
What Affects Cure Time
Temperature
Ideal: 70-80°F (21-27°C)
Too cold (below 60°F): Curing slows significantly. In cold conditions, wait an extra 12-24 hours before use.
Too hot (above 90°F): Can cause the coating to cure too fast, potentially creating texture issues. We avoid working in extreme heat.
Humidity
Ideal: Below 50% relative humidity
High humidity: Moisture in the air slows curing and can prevent proper hardening. Run the exhaust fan and keep windows cracked.
Rainy days: If humidity is very high, add an extra 12 hours to cure times.
Ventilation
Why it matters: Fresh air helps solvents evaporate from the coating, which is essential for proper curing.
What to do: Run the bathroom exhaust fan continuously for the first 24 hours. Crack a window if possible. Good airflow speeds up curing.
Coating Type
2-part epoxy (what we use): Cures through chemical reaction, more predictable timing.
Consumer spray paints: Cure through solvent evaporation only, more variable. Professional coatings are more reliable.
What Happens If You Use It Too Soon?
Using your refinished tub before it's fully cured can cause permanent damage that may not be repairable.
Fingerprints & Handprints
Touch the surface too early and you'll leave permanent impressions in the coating that can't be buffed out.
Scratches & Marks
The soft coating can be scratched by anything — toes, bottles, even running water can leave marks.
Water Damage
Water getting under the coating before it seals properly causes bubbling, peeling, and adhesion failure.
Dents & Deformation
Standing in the tub or placing heavy objects on the soft coating can create permanent depressions.
The bottom line: Patience pays off. Waiting the full cure time protects your investment and ensures a finish that lasts 10-15+ years.
Tips for the Best Cure
Run the Exhaust Fan
Keep your bathroom exhaust fan running for the first 24 hours. This removes fumes and helps the coating cure faster. If you don't have an exhaust fan, crack a window.
Maintain Temperature
Keep your home at normal temperature (68-75°F). Don't turn off the heat in winter or the AC in summer. Consistent temperature helps consistent curing.
Keep the Door Closed
For the first few hours, keep the bathroom door closed to prevent dust, pet hair, or debris from landing on the wet surface. After 4-6 hours, you can open it for ventilation.
Plan Ahead
Schedule your refinishing when you can use another bathroom for 48 hours, or plan showers at a gym, friend's place, or family member's home. refinishing cost
First Use: Lukewarm Water
For your first shower after 48 hours, use lukewarm water rather than very hot. Let the surface adjust to use gradually. After a few uses, hot water is fine.
Remember the Rule
24 hours light use. 48 hours full use. 72 hours heavy items.
