Painting Oak Kitchen Cabinets

Updated October 2026 · Proper Reglazing, licensed CA contractor #1127360

Yes, you can paint oak kitchen cabinets, and they take paint well once the finish is degreased, scuff-sanded and primed with a bonding primer. Oak's open grain will still show as texture under the paint unless it's filled first. Painting an average kitchen of 20–35 doors and drawers costs $2,500–$4,500 with us.

Golden oak cabinets from the 1980s and 1990s are in plenty of Bay Area kitchens. The boxes are often solid, well built and still square. It's the orange tone people want gone.

So can you paint oak kitchen cabinets and be happy with the result? Usually, yes. Oak is a good base for paint, with one catch: the grain. Here's what to expect, how to decide whether to fill the grain, and how prep differs for oak.

Why oak grain shows through paint

Red and white oak are open-grain woods. The surface has deep pores running along the board, and paint doesn't fill them. It follows them. So after painting oak cabinets, the doors still show a texture of fine lines and dashes, especially when light hits them from the side.

How much it shows depends on a few things:

Plenty of people like the grain. It reads as real wood under paint and suits shaker and traditional doors. Others want the flat, smooth look of painted maple or MDF. Decide which you want before getting quotes, because it changes the scope.

Grain filling

Grain filling means working a filler into the pores, letting it dry and sanding it flush, sometimes more than once, before priming. Done well, oak looks close to a smooth painted surface.

It's a real step, not a shortcut:

Our standard process of degreasing, scuff-sanding, bonding primer and two sprayed coats gives a smooth, even finish with the oak grain texture still visible. If you want the grain filled, say so when you send photos so it can be discussed for your specific doors before you get a price. Painted oak with the grain showing is a perfectly good result, and for many kitchens it's the better value.

Prep for oak

Do you have to sand oak cabinets before painting? Yes. Not down to bare wood, but a thorough scuff-sand. Most oak cabinets have a hard, slick factory clear coat, and paint over it without sanding will scratch off.

Prep for oak includes:

Where the finish is worn through to bare wood around handles, those spots soak up primer differently and need extra attention so they don't look different under the paint.

Before and after

When you paint oak kitchen cabinets, going from orange wood to color is about as big a change as you can make without new cabinets. What to expect:

You can see what that looks like in cabinet painting before and after. If you'd rather keep the wood look in a new tone, read about restaining kitchen cabinets. For painting prices and to send photos, visit kitchen cabinet painting.

Common questions

Can you paint oak cabinets without the grain showing?

Only by filling the grain before priming. Without filling, the color covers fully but the grain texture still shows.

Do you have to sand oak cabinets before painting?

Yes, a thorough scuff-sand so primer can grip the slick factory finish. You don't need to sand down to bare wood.

Will oak bleed through white paint?

It can, because oak is high in tannins. A stain-blocking primer under the finish coats prevents yellow or brown spots.

How much does it cost to paint oak kitchen cabinets?

We charge $80 per door and $50 per drawer front, with frames and trim priced on top. Most average kitchens fall between $2,500 and $4,500.
