How Long Does It Take to Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets? For a professional crew, 3–4 days for a typical kitchen, from masking on the first day to reinstalling doors at the end. Larger kitchens with 35 or more doors and drawers sit at the longer end. A DIY job usually stretches across several weekends.
Time is often the deciding factor. A remodel can take a kitchen out of service for weeks or months. Painting is far shorter, but it still means a few days of covered counters and doorless cabinets, so it helps to plan around it.
Here's how long it takes a professional to paint kitchen cabinets, what each day involves, and how that compares with doing it yourself.
Typical timeline day by day
Every kitchen is a little different, but a 3–4 day job usually runs something like this:
- Day 1: protect and prep. Counters, floors and appliances are covered and the kitchen is masked. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labeled. Every surface is degreased and scuff-sanded.
- Day 2: prime. Bonding primer goes on doors, drawer fronts and frames, and has to dry before color.
- Day 3: finish coats. Two sprayed coats of cabinet-grade enamel, with drying time between them.
- Day 4: reinstall. Doors and drawers go back on, hinges are adjusted, masking comes off and we walk you through care.
A small kitchen can compress this. A large kitchen, or one with lots of trim, end panels or an island, uses the full four days. Restaining wood cabinets is a different process and keeps the kitchen out of use for 5–7 days, because the old finish is stripped before new stain and clear coat go on.
Each step is explained in more detail in how professionals paint kitchen cabinets.
Using your kitchen during the job
Plan on the kitchen being a work zone. Counters are covered and cabinets are masked or open, so cooking is limited. Things that help:
- Empty the cabinets and drawers before day one, or ask your painter exactly what needs clearing.
- Set up a small station in another room with a kettle, microwave or toaster oven, and paper plates.
- Ask about refrigerator access when you schedule, since it affects how the area around it gets masked.
- Plan easy meals or takeout for the middle days.
- Keep pets and small kids out of the kitchen while finish coats are going on.
Once doors are back on, the kitchen is yours again. Just go easy on the new finish for a while.

These get mixed up constantly. Dry means the paint is no longer tacky and can be handled. Cured means the film has reached its full hardness. Cabinet enamel dries in hours but cures over a few weeks.
So a 3–4 day job doesn't mean the paint is at full strength on the last day. It's ready to use, but for the first few weeks:
- Clean with a damp soft cloth only. No scrubbing.
- Don't hang wet towels over doors.
- Close doors and drawers gently.
- Hold off on adhesive hooks or bumpers.
Cool, damp weather slows drying and curing. Warm, dry weather speeds them up. That's one reason professionals plan coats around conditions rather than a fixed clock.
DIY timeline
How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets yourself? Much longer, mostly because you're working evenings and weekends with less equipment. A realistic DIY plan for an average kitchen:
- A day to empty, remove doors, label and clean.
- One to two days of sanding and dust cleanup.
- A day for primer, plus drying time.
- Two or more sessions for finish coats on both sides of every door, with drying and light sanding between.
- A day to reinstall and adjust hinges.
Brushing and rolling also means painting one side of each door, waiting, then flipping it, which doubles the drying cycles. Many DIY projects end up spread across several weekends, with the kitchen half-finished in between.
If that's more time than you have, weigh it against a professional price: from $2,000 for a small kitchen and $2,500–$4,500 for most, broken down in cabinet painting cost. For your own number, send photos through our cabinet painting page.
Common questions
How many days does it take to paint kitchen cabinets?
A professional job takes 3–4 days for most kitchens. Doing it yourself usually takes several weekends.
Can I use my kitchen while the cabinets are being painted?
Only in a limited way. Counters and appliances are covered during the work, so plan simple meals and set up a small station elsewhere.
When can cabinet doors be rehung after painting?
Once the finish is dry enough to handle. The paint keeps curing for a few weeks after that, so treat it gently.
Does restaining take longer than painting?
Yes. Restaining keeps the kitchen out of use for 5–7 days because the old finish has to be stripped before new stain and clear coat.
