Painting vs Replacing Kitchen Cabinets: The Real Cost
The cost to paint kitchen cabinets vs replace them is a wide gap: painting runs $2,500–$4,500 for an average Bay Area kitchen and starts at $2,000 for a small one, while replacing usually costs many times more once you add removal, installation and the countertop work that tends to come with it. Painting also takes 3–4 days instead of weeks.
When you compare the cost to paint kitchen cabinets vs replace them, the cabinet price itself is only part of the story. Replacement pulls in other trades and other materials. Painting leaves everything that already works exactly where it is.
We paint and restain cabinets. We do not sell or install new ones, so here is a straight look at both, including when replacement really is the better call.
The price gap
Start with our side of the cost to paint kitchen cabinets vs replace them. Our painting prices fall into three bands: from $2,000 for a small kitchen with under 20 doors and drawers, $2,500–$4,500 for an average kitchen with 20–35, and $4,500 and up for 35 or more. Per piece, that is $80 per door and $50 per drawer front, with frames, end panels and trim on top.
New cabinets usually cost many times more than that, and that is before installation. Even budget stock lines add up across a whole kitchen, and semi-custom or custom work climbs fast. Restaining existing wood cabinets sits close to painting, at $80 per door with drawer fronts quoted per job. So whether you look at cabinet refinishing vs replacement or painting vs replacement, the gap is wide. That is the core of the refinish or replace kitchen cabinets cost question.
Hidden costs of replacement (counters, plumbing, permits)
- Countertops. Stone counters sit on top of the boxes. Pulling the cabinets often means pulling the counters, and slabs can crack on removal. If the new cabinets are a different size, the old counters may not fit at all.
- Backsplash. Tile is usually set tight to the counter. Lift the counter and some or all of the tile often comes with it.
- Plumbing and appliances. The sink, faucet, disposal and dishwasher have to be disconnected and reconnected. Old shutoff valves and drain parts sometimes need replacing once they are disturbed.
- Permits. If the project grows into moving plumbing, gas lines or wiring, ask your contractor whether your city requires a permit. That adds fees, inspections and waiting.
- Floors and walls. New cabinets with a different footprint can expose gaps in the flooring and unpainted wall.
None of this comes up when you paint. Counters, plumbing and floors stay in place, and they are covered and masked while we work.

Painting takes 3–4 days. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labeled, every surface is degreased and sanded, then a bonding primer and two sprayed coats go on before everything is reinstalled and the hinges are adjusted. If you choose to restain instead, plan on 5–7 days without a kitchen.
Replacement usually takes weeks. You wait for cabinets to be ordered and delivered, then come demolition, installation, countertop templating and fabrication, plumbing reconnection and backsplash. Each trade waits on the one before it. For a household that cooks every night, that difference can matter as much as the money.
When replacement is the right call
Paint does not fix structural problems or a bad floor plan. Replacement makes more sense when:
- Cabinet boxes are swollen, delaminating or soft from water damage, usually under the sink or beside the dishwasher.
- The layout does not work. If you need a bigger fridge opening, an island, or drawers instead of deep base cabinets, new paint will not change that.
- Most doors are peeling thermofoil, which cannot just be painted over.
- You are already replacing counters, flooring and appliances, and a full remodel was the plan anyway.
- The boxes are flimsy particleboard with failing joints and sagging shelves.
If the boxes are sound and the layout is fine, painting is almost always the better use of the money. Not sure which side you are on? Common questions
Is it cheaper to paint or replace kitchen cabinets?
Painting is far cheaper. An average Bay Area kitchen costs $2,500–$4,500 to paint, while new cabinets usually cost many times more before counters and plumbing are counted.
Can you paint cabinets that have water damage?
Paint will not fix swollen or soft particleboard. If only the sink base is damaged, send photos so we can tell you whether painting the rest still makes sense.
Will painting my cabinets damage the countertops?
No. Counters, floors and appliances are covered and everything is masked before any sanding or spraying starts.
How long will I be without a kitchen?
Painting takes 3–4 days and restaining 5–7 days. Replacing cabinets usually takes weeks once ordering, installation and countertop work are included.
