Refinish or Replace Kitchen Cabinets?
To decide whether to refinish or replace kitchen cabinets, refinish if the boxes are solid, the layout works and the problem is mainly the finish or color, and replace if the boxes are swollen or coming apart, or if you need a different layout. Painting runs $2,500–$4,500 for an average Bay Area kitchen and takes 3–4 days, while replacement usually costs many times more.
The decision to refinish or replace kitchen cabinets comes down to two questions. Are the boxes sound? Does the kitchen work the way you use it? If both answers are yes, you almost certainly do not need new cabinets.
Here is a check you can do yourself in one walk around the kitchen before you call anyone.
Check the boxes: solid or swollen?
Empty the sink base first, because that is where water damage shows up. Then go cabinet by cabinet:
- Press on the floor of the sink cabinet. Soft, spongy or bubbled particleboard means water got in. One damaged sink base is a repair problem. Swelling throughout the kitchen is a replacement problem.
- Look at the bottom edges of doors and panels near the dishwasher and sink. Swollen, flaking edges on particleboard or MDF do not flatten back out.
- Open and close every door. Loose hinges are normal and get adjusted at reinstall. Hinge screws spinning in crumbling material are a bigger problem.
- Check shelves and drawer boxes. Sagging shelves and drawers that come apart point to weak construction.
- Look at the face frames. Solid wood frames that are tight at the joints are a great base for paint.
Is the layout working?
Paint changes how cabinets look, not where they are. Ask yourself:
- Do you have enough counter space between the sink, stove and fridge?
- Does a modern fridge fit the opening, or are you stuck with a narrow one?
- Is the storage usable, or are you fighting a blind corner and deep base cabinets you never reach into?
- Is the kitchen closed off when you want it open to the living area?
If the layout fails you on the big items, you are really planning a remodel, and painting the old cabinets only delays it. If the layout is fine and you just dislike the look, refinishing is the right path. Smaller storage gripes, like wanting a pull-out trash can or drawer dividers, can usually be solved with inserts inside the cabinets you have.

- The boxes are solid, with at most minor wear.
- The doors are flat and tight, even if the style is dated.
- The finish is worn, yellowed, orange or just not your taste.
- The surface is wood, MDF, laminate, melamine or already painted. A bonding primer grips all of these.
- An old paint job is peeling. That sounds bad, but it usually means the first job skipped prep. With the loose paint removed and proper degreasing, sanding and priming, a new finish can bond well.
If you have real wood and want to keep the grain, restaining is the other refinishing route, at $80 per door with 5–7 days out of the kitchen. Painting is $80 per door and $50 per drawer front, with frames and trim on top, and it is done in 3–4 days. Not sure about your surface? Check which kitchen cabinets can be painted.
Signs you need new cabinets
- Swelling, soft spots or delaminating particleboard in many cabinets, not just one.
- An ongoing leak or mold behind the cabinets. Fix the source first either way.
- A layout that does not fit how you cook or the appliances you want.
- Peeling thermofoil across most doors. It cannot just be painted over.
- You are already replacing counters, flooring and appliances as part of a bigger remodel.
Should I paint or replace kitchen cabinets if only one or two are damaged? Usually paint. Have the damaged pieces repaired or replaced, then paint the whole kitchen so it matches. Common questions
Is it worth refinishing old kitchen cabinets?
Yes, if the boxes are solid and the layout works. Older cabinets often have solid wood frames that take paint or new stain very well.
How do I know if my cabinets are too damaged to paint?
Soft, swollen or delaminating particleboard, crumbling hinge holes and failing joints are the warning signs. Paint does not fix structural damage.
Can I paint my cabinets if a few doors are damaged?
Yes. Swollen or broken doors need repair or replacement first, then the whole kitchen can be painted to match. Send photos and we will tell you what we see.
Is refinishing cheaper than replacing cabinets?
Yes. Painting an average kitchen costs $2,500–$4,500, while replacement usually costs many times more once counters and plumbing are involved.
